Tuesday Media Hoedown

You may have heard a little something about the Pickens Plan today.

T. Boone was asked to appear today before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee to talk about America’s oil addiction and the Pickens Plan. As soon as a transcript is available we’ll slap it up here on the blog, but in the meantime here’s a sampling of some of the media coverage kicking around this morning.

The New York Times praised T. Boone’s initiative in an editorial, writing:

T. Boone Pickens, the legendary wildcatter and corporate raider, has decided that drilling for more oil is not the answer to the nation’s energy problems. President Bush should listen to his fellow Texan and longtime political ally.

Reporter Steven Mufson on the the Pickens Plan in the Washington Post:

Pickens said he launched his campaign, known as “the Pickens plan,” because “this is the last chance for me. I’m 80, and I have the money to do this.” He said: “It’s not anything for Boone Pickens to make money. I got plenty of money.” Besides, he said, his estate will go to charity. Instead, he said, he wants to “elevate the debate” because the presidential candidates “do not have much of an energy plan for the short term, and the short term has to be addressed.”

And T. Boone’s hometown newspaper, the Amarillo Globe-News, got in on the act:

Business magnate T. Boone Pickens built the makings of his oil-and-gas fortune right here in Amarillo, and he’s preparing to spend a good piece of it on a campaign that, he hopes, will wean this country off its dependence on foreign fossil fuels.

That’s not all. CNN MoneyCNBC (with video), McClatchy news service, the Politico, Reuters, the Austin American-Statesman, and even the Financial Times out of the UK have all covered T. Boone and his plan.

More updates as they arrive. And if you’re just arriving here, here’s what all the fuss is about.

I found Mr Pickens presentation to the Senate Homeland Security Cmte to be very inspiring. I recommend that all PP members watch this interview. This is the link on C-SPAN to watch the whole session: rtsp://video1.c-span.org/project/energy/energy072208_initiatives.rm (this is an rtsp file and some computers have difficulty recognizing it, you may have to download and install RealPlayer to view this formatting) anyone who knows how to change rtsp files to meg or mov files, please contact me http://push.pickensplan.com/profile/DavidBaker it would be very helpful as we could then post CSPAN interviews on the PP website!
