NBC, the Pickens Plan, and the Army

On Wednesday the Pickens Plan Army engaged in a battle against NBC.

The network had refused to run our 15-second ad talking about how Iran–IRAN–is moving quickly to CNG-powered vehicles so they can free up their oil to sell it to us at $120 per barrel.

Guess what: We won the battle!

By Wednesday evening, NBC had re-examined its position and told us they WOULD allow our ad to run in its original form.

Congratulations, Army! You did it! Here’s the ad you convinced NBC to run:

Help.......I need an address for NBC. What address do I send my comments to?

What a great ad. That should wake some people up about Natural Gas. Wish the area we live in had natural gas - Hot Springs Village, AR.

William L. Lewis

Just as soon as there is real evidence that there are places to buy CNG to fuel cars, then the first company that offers a reliable conversion kit for cars/trucks will be very busy and will make a mint! What a boost to the economy that will be!

The United States is supposed to be a world leader. We are making ourselves look like fools because of polital gain for the selfish minority. We as citizens better stand up and make our voice heard. The automakers deserve to go bankrupt as they have seen this coming for many years. They chose to make cars that have more horsepower and less MPG. When they decided to let the government tell them what to do for consumers they lost it in my book. A real leader in the auto industry would put out a car that gives the consumer what they need and stop with all the toys and speed. Another issue is lack of public mass transit in this country. As for the media...Lord help us all because we are force fed what we can and can not see in this country. I am glad this ad will be aired. I only hope it is just the start of much more of this form of advertisement.

A CNG infrastructure already exist in the West. We live in SLC and have a CNG Honda Civic. My wife is a home health care nurse and puts 500 miles a week on a car. Before our Civic we were spending $70 a week in gas. (Pre $4/gal) We switched to CNG Honda and now spend $7. (CNG in Utah is $0.85/gal) The performance is the same and CNG is much less caustic to your engine. After a year with over 30K miles we can look a the oil dipstick and the oil is the same nice amber color it was when we put it in. If you don't know if you have public fueling stations (check out http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/stations/find_station.php) in your area check out fuelmaker.com, a home CNG compressor called the Phil unit that works off your home's natural gas lines. We got tax CREDITS when we bought our Civic. $4k from the fed and $3k from Utah. If you don't have a dealer that sells Civic GX then check out cngmotors.com. He's a dealer in AZ that sells used CNG vehicles. Conversions are a little pricey. It's easier to just buy a new Civic or a used CNG car. More dealers used to offer new CNG vehicles but I guess the demand wasn't there. Fortunately for our family, Honda had the foresight to continue with the CNG Civic GX.

Maybe we can get our towns to convert our school buses to natural gas, that should save gasoline.

Ralph Hill

Unfortunatly Ken, the big three puts out what we, the consumer, usually asks for. You may remember or it may have been before your time, but in the early 60's the big 3 all came out with small 4 cylinder gas savers to try to combat the foreign imports that were getting much better milage. The first thing that was griped about, was the stick shift, so the companies put in automatic slush boxes behind the small 4 or 6 banger. Needless to say, performance, which was nothing to speak of to begin with, fell even more. I speak from experience, I owned a '60 Ford Falcon. Sooooo, what to do, put in a bigger engine, either a larger 4 or a larger 6 cylinder. That helped but the public still wanted more speed and performance, soooooooooo, the V-8 was introduced in the small gas saving models. Performance went up and gas milage went down, surpirsed???? Everytime that the big 3, and I am not an endorser of them or their policies by any stretch of the imagination, tries to make a gas saving model, up til now. the public has screamed that it wanted more performance. Is it any wonder that they have put out the models they have? At least now, they are trying to correct the problem. I own a '07 Ford Five Hundred, with a V-6 in it. It is peppy and gets pretty good milage, on a trip last year to Calif. pulling a small trailer, we got between 30 and 32 MPG, which beats the milage we get on our '02 S-10 4 cylinder pickup. I am waiting for CNG to come to our area and then am going to find a way to convert both of them to CNG as well as our home. Go Pickens Plan and thanks for coming to all our aid.

Iran's adoption of natural gas goes back to 9/11. Isn't that just too coincidental? It was interesting to read the posts and see how many went beyond the ad and do their own online research. This proved the veracity of the Iran/CNG assertion as well as gave greater insight into the foresight these people are capable of. We as a country ignore and minimize them at our own peril. That's why it's important to broadcast to the American public what they are doing and their motivation. In order to counter them, we have to be alert and creative ourselves. The problem is our leaders don't lead. They maintain stasis. That's why we now lag the rest of the world - mediocre leadership. We don't need to go to the moon again or Mars. We need to fix our energy problems first. The average American can not relate to space. He/she can sure relate to filling their tank for a hundred dollar bill!

Robert Haney

Iran, Pakistan and India have a lot of NGV's they see the need in conserving. As for the post about wish I had a place to fuel a natural gas car. If you have NG piped to your home you can fill up at home. After all the PP army start buying the home pumps the price of them will go down as well. Everybody keep up the good work. God bless the Pickens Plan.

michael l. french

is this a surprise? when our senators and congressmen earn(i use that loosely) their livelyhoods for pocketing money from big oil lobbyists, it's no wonder our energy agenda is nearly non-existent. please mr.boone keep pounding at the public;force feed them information if need be,but help the public understand our dire need for new energy sourses. thank you mike french

Rand

So far our public buses run on NG, and a few city vehicles, but Coloradoans are known for their famous "one person/one car" attitude, and its difficult to change peoples' attitude here, even though we are developing air problems, and have a cyclic economy.

Matt Gilbert

Wow, that was a fast reaction to Pickens Army, I didn't even have a chance to email any one.

James Hill

I also did not get a chance to e-mail NBC. Great job members. James

This is really something. The President of Iran is smarter than ours. Using CNG in his country to screw us even more. We need to write our politicians and tell them to get w/The Pickens Plan!!!! Our Army is getting bigger, GREAT!!!!!!!!! James

Michael Paulson

Regretably the american public has little motivation and a lot of self indulgence when it comes to change. We allow congress to breach the faith to us and standby while the Bush administration allows big oil to run the country. True conservatives will not allow RUSH and his ilk to pander to the special interests to minimize the global warming issues and the role energy producers play in our enviromental problems, and all energy concerns fall in this catagory!

John Baird

What the US should do is replace all of the energy represented by our oil imports with wind generated electrical power. This takes 366,000 5-megawatt wind turbines located on the 2 million square miles of windy region in the US. Then we run all of the motor fleet on hydrogen gas electrolyzed from water that can be generated wherever there is electrical power and water, like at the point of sale. Everything that runs on fossil fuel will run on hydrogen now. Hydrogen has three times the energy of gasoline per pound; the cost will be about $2.60 per gallon of gasoline energy equivalent. Ending US oil imports saves $2 BILLION per DAY in negative trade balance, plus our military will not be required to secure our title to world oil saving close to $1 BILLION per day for other assignments. Using wind power to generate hydrogen for motor fuel is carbon free.

Randy Ashman

Being an Ret. Auto Mechanic and a resident of San Diego CA. I say we slow down here about the cost of Natural Gas. It costs a small fortune to heat my small home here on natural gas. Even here with our very mild winters. The price will only go up as demand goes up. So by converting to Natural gas for our cars(in southern California anyway)we will not save much, if anything. But I suppose that the point is, "at least the money would stay here, in America, vs the Middle East." Well that is a noble thought. I do like one persons idea about pulling into ones own garage and filling ones tank from a conection to the city's natural gas line. That would be cool. Randy Ashman

I just sent this to NBC. They need to wake up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are making a big mistake in not running that ad from T. Boone Pickens. By refusing that ad, you are saying that you feel that it's adverse to your interest. That's also saying that you are adverse to the national interest, or greater good. I don't wonder that Jay Leno takes so many shots at NBC, and why you're going to lose a big audience share, when you put Conan O'Brien in as the Tonite Show host. Your management just isn't in touch with the public. Too bad. Chandler Dann cdann@usamedia.tv

All good and valid comments here. Fortunately we have the power to force NBC to run an ad such as this. What in the world were they thinking? Why were they against it? What was there justification? They must be in bed with someone from the oil side. I feel we all need to send an e-mail to NBC anyway as a group to let them know how many people are sick and tired and having our hands tied by Big Oil and Oil producing countrys. There is power in numbers. Hondas first import to the US got 45 to 50 miles per gallon and that was a long, long time ago. The Auto industry still could easily add another 10 plus mpg to any and all cars w/o jeoparding performance or air quality. They chose not to. The government has known for years the course of action we were on and chose not step in. Yes consumers want faster performance cars and have been led to believe up until recently that all was well in the world until the barrel of oil jumped up well past a $100 per. This simply is not just on the consumer, but our government as well. The Saudi oil fields are drying up. Never heard that 5 yeas ago? And only until as of late there are numerous reports they are years away from being dry or loosing 50% plus of their oil capacity. For god sakes we put a man on the moon 40 years ago and your telling me more cant be done to improve mpg. There simply hasnt been the push in technology to do so. Ultimately as we know this isnt the main issue, but it would have some impact on the immediate short term. I love the Pickens Plan and am thankful for him standing up and telling us like it is. It has "jump started" the public conversation and we need to build on it as a group and force our local, state and national officials to get off their behinds and start moving.

I live in Elko Nevada...propane is $308 a gallon and it goes up in the winter...no fuel savings there...but in a remote community such as ours (where any competitive business is located 4 hours away) we get price gouged on everything...but know what...WE DO HAVE WIND...WE NEED WIND POWER GENERATORS HERE...LIKE YESTERDAY!!!

As stated above, the big 3 are giving the consumer what it is asking for. A perfect example is I own a 2006 Honda Insight. This car has been around for quite a few years. This car was originally introduced with the U.S. consumer in mind as an economical commuter vehicle but was a flop. The U.S. consumer did not want that and in 2006 production of the Insight stopped. The same technology was moved up in the Civic and Accord but the high miles per gallon went down because of the much bigger vehicle it was powering and the American people still are not flocking to purchase one of these. One little note if I may introduce is my average miles per gallon with my Honda Insight with a 5 speed manual transmission runs between 72 to 75 miles per gallon. And no it's not a big, high powered luxury hotel full of all the latest toys and gadgets, it just gets me back and forth to work right there in the middle of them. While commuting just look around you at the big SUV's, luxury cars and monster trucks driving along with one driver.....we are the problem and we have to change.

Dan Gregg

How about stop the polictal crying!! You would think that Bush is totally responsible for this mess, not even close. We as consumers had the biggest part in this mess. As someone said ealier, the car companies tried to give us better gas mileage but it failed. Does anyone remember the propane phase in the eighties and eveyone cried about the big tanks? Just to remind everyone that there have been CNG buses in some major cities for quite some time. What happened to the electric cars in the nineties? I will tell you, it wasn't big oil it was big auto makers that killed it. So don't blame anyone but you and I, we should have stood with the folks that were driving electric cars and demanded a change twenty years ago. But why would we do that, oil was cheap and it would have taken some effort on our part. I am all in on alternatives but remember that Mr. Pickens was part of that big oil himself and it took quite a while for him to move to the alternative fuel side. Why would you think the government would move any quicker until the people start pushing harder for change?

Kevin Millecam

I live in the SLC area and even though (as Michael stated above) we get state and federal rebates for buying CNG vehicles, I'm finding it hard to buy one? What's wrong with this picture? I'm on a 6-month waiting list to buy a CNG Honda GX (wake up Honda!). I can get my current car/truck converted to run CNG but it will cost me (thanks to our government's regulations and red tape) between $7,000 and $10,000. Come on Washington, get rid of the red tape, get out of our way, and let us (affordably) do what's right.

Angie MacKay

we are definitely on the road to change =go palin

It is truly time for each one of us to speak up. Thank you, Mr. Pickens, for being a rallying point for common sense and courage to push this dormant country into having a future worth having! Does anyone out there know HOW individuals can accomplish some of these things that, taken together, could make Washington bureaucracy and Wall Street wake up and listen? -- for example, WHERE and HOW can we find a CNG car to buy or convert, and where/ how we could get CNG to be available in our communities? Ditto for solar, wind, etc. If communities could, on their own, get SOME alternative energy solution(s) in place, the message would become impossible for Washington/Wall Street to ignore....Mr. Pickens: where is a good place to start, from the bottom, so we can support your plan at the grass roots level also?

Mary Tripp

I believe in American ingenuity - I truly believe someone will come up with affordable conversion kits. Not all of us can run out and buy a new car, but we definitely would be pay for an affordable conversion kit. We need to force congress to act. It boggles the mind that they seem to think we are so stupid that we will continue to allow them to get by with doing nothing.

Raymond Beitz

Pickens you make me proud to be an American again. We finally got someone to come out of the woodwork and say stuff is broke in this country's ways of doing business. Hopefully this won't be something that fizzles out before it gets a chance to do some good. I was reluctant to do much because he made his money from BIG OIL but I'm glad to see maybe he's going to get us to wake up and get out of our doldrums before we all go broke. At least he's putting his money where his mouth is not like some others. If nothing more than starting to make us all wake up and get more involved he's going to be doing what we need to. Get weaned off our dependance on foreign oil. YAY big time. Too bad this isn't something that can be ready to go with a push. It'll be quite a while before we can get the costs involved with CNG conversions down to where it's going to be really affordable. In my state the only ones running on CNG are some of the government vehicles. Maybe this will spur something to happen that the rest of us can reap at least a benefit from and not run to the poor house in the process. Good Going Pickens proud to be in the Army again.

If Iran can change their cars to run on natural gas, so can we. Here is a suggestion, how about a hybrid cars that runs on battery and natural gas. Anyways, I'm glad that NBC will run this ad.

Mike Thompson

This is great news. It didn't seem logical that they wouldn't want that on their network anyways. Keep up all the great work you're doing for this country Mr. Pickens! We need more leaders like you.... people that actually care about the well-being of this country.

I'm glad to say that I just received notice of NBC's reversal of its" decision on this matter. Well Done!

BTW, it is my understanding that this was all resolved last week. Why did I just get a new email asking me to complain to NBC about it again?

Linda Pruss

florida responds! Dear Linda: I am as frustrated as you are about the rapid increase in gas prices the country is experiencing. As I travel throughout the eight counties that encompass the 5th District, I know how painful it is to fill up a gas tank even once a week. I have energy proposals that take into consideration this country's short-term energy needs as well as its long-term goals. I have a plan that utilizes our country's abundant natural resources so that we do not have to beg OPEC nations to increase their production when times get tough. Additionally, my energy plans will lead this country towards an independent energy future. In the short-term, America needs to tackle the devastatingly high cost of gasoline. This is not only hurting our wallets, it is crippling our economy. To do this I have taken three major steps. The first is to support the drilling for oil and natural gas in the United States, which is why I cosponsored a number of bills that open previously restricted areas to responsible drilling. In the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that there is over 10.4 billion barrels of recoverable oil. In the Gulf of Mexico, the USGS estimates that there are over 3.6 billion barrels of oil and over 21 trillion cubic feet of natural gas that are currently of limits. In total, the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) is estimated to contain more than 88 billion barrels of oil and approximately 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. While opening these areas to energy exploration would surely make a dramatic impact, they do not include the estimated 8 trillion barrels of oil shale locked up in the Green River Formation, which encompasses parts of Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. To put these numbers in perspective Saudi Arabia's proven oil reserves are at 259 billion barrels. The second short-term solution focuses on building new refineries and increasing the capacity of current refineries. Because of bureaucratic red tape, no new refineries have been built in the United States in over 30 years. This fact alone has led to a situation in which demand exceeds supply. Consequently, I cosponsored H.R. 2279 and H.R. 3089. The first bill, introduced by Congressman Joseph Pitts (R - PA), will expedite construction of new refinery capacity on closed military installations in the United States. The second bill, introduced by Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-TX), will expedite the construction of new refineries through tax incentives and by setting aside at least 10 sites for oil or natural gas refineries on federal lands. My third short-term solution was to introduce H.R. 6183, which eliminates the tariff on ethanol imports into this country. Americans should be filling our gas tanks with the most efficient and least costly ethanol, which Brazil has been producing from sugar cane for over three decades. In fact, for every unit of petroleum used to make ethanol from Brazilian sugarcane ten units of ethanol are produced. Compare this to the energy ratio of corn ethanol, which is one unit of petroleum per 1.8 units of ethanol. It becomes clear that ethanol made only from corn is simply holding this country back. Throughout my tenure in public service, I have always kept an open door and an open dialogue with my constituents. As Congress addresses the many challenges facing our nation, I hope you will continue to share your thoughts and views with me. Accordingly, I encourage you to visit my Web site at http://brown-waite.house.gov to email me and find useful information about our 5th Congressional District. It is my honor and privilege to serve the people of Florida's 5th Congressional District and my offices and staff are here to provide you with any assistance you may need. Sincerely, Ginny Brown-Waite Member of Congress

Natural gas (for use in cars) may be AN answer, but it's not the best one. It would be expensive to get stations set up for this, and it would take a long time to do. And once we started using it, would the price go up? Look what has happened to food prices, once we started using CORN to make fuel!!! Electric cars have many problems also. The weight of the batteries, the cost of the batteries, and FIRE dangers are amoung those. But just think about what AIR CARS (see YouTube, Air Car 1 and Air Car 2) would do for us. Say GOODBYE to foreign oil and smog; say HELLO to JOBS here in America where these cars would be manufactured. And no need to spend BILLIONS converting stations to be able to sell natural gas---have we started building them yet??????

In the late 70's a frugal friend (here on beach in Pensacola ) converted his 1960 Chrysler station wagon to Propane. He installed a 500gal tank beside his driveway and refueled as necessary from there. I don't recall specifics, but he was completely satisfied with the result and let all who would listen hear about it. He drove the wagon until salt water corrosion and blowing sand literally ate the body up. The engine and conversion equip were still in good shape. Is such a solution not possible today? If not, why not? Are there reliable sources for conversion kits? Jim Liles Pensacola, Florida

Lobbyist is the main corruption tool., They buy the CEO's and tell them what to do. We will never win , because (MONEY) and GREED is too strong, Congress can't do a thing, They have to check with their lobbyist first. Foreign oil have billions they don't need. So they can buy any one. When money becomes worthless then we stand a chance

I am in total agreement with the compressed air engine for our cars! What a no-brainer! Why can't we get this? Duh! Tata Motors is already producing these and a taxi service the country of India is using these compressed air engine cars exclusively! Talk about new jobs and zero emissions! Come on America, let's get excited about this technology! Compressed air works, and it is safe and may only harm the environment by the use of fossil fuel in it's production, if that is even necessary. Terry Beckham Napa, CA

Natural gas might be our long range solution unless it will be more dangeous and explosive to handle. Gas leakages are harder to discover than liquids. Wind power for electric consumption is also a good solution but it will take so many of the generators to make the big impact we need. The least expensive solution for cars is immediate expansion of our reserves, off-shore, ANWAR and home grown shale. I feel that whenever our country decides to follow one or more of the reserve plans you will watch the oil prices drop pronto.

jerry johnson

NBC is in the dust bin of history.....how about we stoip heating our water with fossil fuel...in Hawaii we burn diesel to generate electricity to heat water....how stupid is that? every power customer of every utility should have solar now.....taxcredits don't work for landlords or most taxpayers....mandate utilties to install solar in every account that heats water and doesn't have solar.....the savings...about 40% is held by utility until cost is recovered..plus a handling cost.....this should be recovered at account holder...renter or landlord...whoever is getting savings...no cost to them and when recovered they get savings....let property owner get tax subsidy..user gets savings??? this would save a lot of electricity...utilities can get a good install price if they are ordering thousands of panels??? this could be done now!!!!

Dear Craig is everything in France free...real Americans believe a person ought to work for what they get; which is another hugh problem facing America. Thanks to welfare dependency and too many assorted government handouts over the last 2-3 decades our gov. (led primarily by the democrates) have engineered a generation of Americans that don't even know the meaning of work ethic. Without shame they believe everybody owes them a living instead of working for their own. This has affected every skin color. it robs a person of worth and dignity. It keeps it's victims enslaved and down trodden. It makes one reliant upon another for thier very exhistance, when this becomes the norm our government has failed us. America is by the people for the people. It's US, all colors, male, female, boy, and girl. Boone Pickens is an example of the work ethic that build this great nation. There is none other like it... Americans are waking up and those who have been enslaved to the devisive measures of government are waking up too! Free at last, Free at last... The opportunity is still there for those who are willing to work for it. Let's work together! Katrina Ramirez

I am not at all surprised when I hear things concerning media bias, etc. After all, look what just went on in the primaries for months. NBC needs to understand that if they won't run the ad, someone else will! Our country needs to move foward with alternative energy, and I know that I am not just speaking for myself, but Americans are fed up with the hand we have been dealt by both government and media. Time to get cracking and take control of our destiny, because if we leave it up to our current administration and the media, it's not going to be a pretty picture.

Wind, CNG, LNG, solar, hydrogen. All good alternative ideas. We cannot depend on the government to do all of this. Whether it is held up by corruption, yes it exists, government employees are human after all, big oil, or Us automakers dropping the ball, (they have been providing what consumers demand, after all.) Until more consumers in this country demand more environmentally concious products, none of these corporations are going to act any faster than thier shareholders will allow. This grassroots effort is an excellent start in the right direction, and all of these alternatives are realistic and viable. It will take many years of reasearch to bring many of them to a mass market in an affordable manner, if the status quo is not changed. Look back to the mobilization of the American war machine during the Secand World War and you will have an idea of what everyday Americans can do when they put their minds and backs into an endeavor. This is a matter of national security, but we cannot count on the federal government to do everything, or even the right thing always. Iam proud of my country, but don't alwasy trust our leaders to do what should be done, or at times to even know what we the people wish to be done. Keep on telling them and maybe they will wake up or at least get out of our the way.

Arlene Hilfer

I lived through the gas crisis of the early seventies and honestly thought that experience would drive America to research alternative methods of energy for cars as well as personal use. Was I naive! Think about heating your home with oil as we do. I paid for half a tank of home heating oil last spring, approximately 125 gallons. The cost? $410.00. Do you think we can afford to heat with oil? Not likely. Natural gas is not available where we live, but wood is and I will continue to use our wood stove to heat my home. I am tired of paying foreign countries for oil. We need alternative energy sources now!

I volunteer as a Democrat for McCain. I will send the ad to top people in Tallahassee. It is time the news media pay attention to Mr. Pickens. He cares and our elected officials better get on board.

Latega Powell

It's great that NBC finally has allowed the ad to be broadcast. So, this takes away from the speculation that NBC refused to broadcast it due to some political bias. Another very obvious reason we need to move away from fossil fuels is not just our dependence on foreign oil, but our dependence on OIL whether foreign or domestic. Gustav is predicted to have devastating effects on the oil industry in the GOM. We could see $4 or even $5 gas by weeks end.

Gary Ramthun

All of the points were made in one of the comments above. We the consumers have not previously shown that we really want efficient cars and to pursure alternate energy. Don't look for anyone in government to take the lead. They only respond to what the latest poll shows them. I remember the gas lines in the 70s and the smaller cars that came out for awhile. It was practical to have smaller houses as well. In the 80s the governments were giving incentives to put in passive solar heating. If the gas prices come down to soon, we will return to our old ways.

Tough love. If a gasoline tanker pulled up to your driveway each night, topped off your cars fuel tanks for free and left a mint underneath your pillow we still can not afford it. Oil is killing our country and this planet. Linda Pruss one of the worst moves you can make is to buy into the "drill everywhere now" mentality. I don't know who you are but you sound like a politician trying to tell the most voters, what your polls say they most want to hear, at the moment. The time for lobbyist control is over in this nation. The second worse event that could happen is for oil prices to drop. We all know this has happened before. The country gets motivated when an oil shortage / price scenario fires everyone up. Then the price drops and the goal of energy independence suddenly becomes too much trouble. Recently we have once again become de-sensitized to gasoline prices. The normal price a few days ago was $4.75 plus a gallon. Today it is somewhat less. So now we will flock to the service stations and fill up our 14 mpg vehicles and comment on how it is so much better that todays gasoline price is only $3.25 per gallon. Yes good times have come again? Three years ago it was less than $2.00 a gallon. Folks we are being played here and national security is a bigger item than the economics of the situation. The best thing that could happen is for oil go to $200 a barrel right now. If it doesn't then tax it until it does. Use that tax money to fund research on getting this countries energy situation actually controlled by this country. Oil needs to be $300 a barrel before the end of 2009. Cheap oil will doom us. "Drill everywhere right now" is a short sighted move that puts you on the oil companies bandwagon. Do not pretend that capitalism is an excuse for being a traitor to the USA at this time. Lord knows I have never been considered a tree hugger but I have trouble understanding people who once protested the drilling offshore and Alaska until it cost more than $50 to fill up their own gas tank. So your convictions on what was important to the environment doesn't count anymore because gasoline cost more? This is from the perspective of my wife and myself who are parents of a 5

My first posting. Wish I had found this long ago. I drive a hybrid, and I kept strict, accurate records for the first 70,000 miles, during which I averaged 51.3 MPG. (this is in-town driving; it drops to 46-48 mpg on the interstate at 75-80 mph). Maintenance and repair history:... none, zilch.Heeteak Chung has the best solution; a hybrid that runs on natural gas. If I had that, then the Arabs could drink their oil. Back in the '70s I drove a 53 Plymouth that belonged to my sister-in-law. This car had been converted to natural gas, and I know the kit was not all that expensive, as they were not wealthy. It ran very well for a very long time, much like the one described by Jim Liles. We have the technology. What we don't have is the will. But, because of forums like this, I think we are getting there. Jeb Stewart, Milton, FL

I saw Gustav mentioned above and have been thinking that this is just another excuse for the oil companies to drive up the prices at the pump. We have had oil rigs in the gulf for years and hurricanes have been coming in the gulf since before written history. Why is it now that suddenly it is disrupting oil companies more than it did in the past. I have been scratching my head and cannot remember any time in the past when a hurricane came into the gulf that gas prices at the pumps spiraled like they do now. It is just another way of price gouging. They hold the reins and they dictate the price, but with this army and with T Boone as our leader, hopefully that will change in the not to distant future. Go Pickens Plan!!

Harold B. Mosher

I posted a message last night that isn't there now. It expressed my concern that a vision as unifying and constructive as T. Boone Pickens' needs to subsist on facts. I haven't seen any real evidence that Iran is actually converting their transportation sector to natural gas in order to enable them to sell more oil. If this is just a possibility, say so; if it's what's happening let's have the substance and sources. Furthermore, censorship, along with relying on allegations, is not dialog and not in the best of American traditions.

I'm getting flashbacks form the 60's.....Now if we could only convince the government....whichever party or candidate wins, that we should reward innovative thinking and give more tax incentives for alternative energy solutions...including Mr. Pickens plan for natural gas... Thank you to all those who are part of the solution and fighting back for what is correct for the future of our planet and economy....I am proud to be a part of you!

You have to ask yourself why Iran is making these changes and not the U.S. They want the profits, but we could make the changes too. Who is blocking it? Auto industry? Oil industry? The people need to push (through Pikens Plan and legislation) to make these same types of changes happen for our great nation and reduce and eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. Thanks Boone for bringing this to our attention.

In the mid 1980's I lived in Holland and CNG powered cars were all over the place. It was old technology then. These cars could also run on gasoline if you could not find a CNG refueling station. I don't really care what Iran is doing, but WE should start converting our cars (at least some of them) to CNG now. The problem now is infrastructure, i.e. no refueling stations.

NATURAL GAS IS NOT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

James Hopkins

Natural gas is not the answer. You're still relying on the oil industry to obtain it. In addition, it is not a renewable source of energy. Electrical cars are the future.

Michael Vallez

IRAN VERSUS US- APPLES AND ORANGES Boone, you are really showing your true colors here. I joined the Pickens plan because I thought that you genuinely wanted to do some good for America. This recent ad and your actions with this blog are very disappointing, because you are abusing the facts, and manipulating your “army”. With 69 million people, and 19% of the worlds proven natural gas reserves, the Iranians have an excess of natural gas, without sufficient export pipelines or liquefaction facilities to sell it on the world markets. With 301 million people and 4% of the world’s natural gas, the US has a shortage of the product. The last thing we need is another demand for natural gas. Shame on you! You should be spanked!

Let me get this straight Mr. Pickens is upset because NBC "ONE" channel out of 500 other Cable channels WONT run his ad? I thought the point is getting the message out there... So you want to use what public interest to force "One" station out of 500 or so to push your commercial on. Get real - I think you're loosing perspective here... on your long term goal. In truth Mr. Pickens I think you're beginning to realize the limitations on the scope of this project and you think the america public is just going to rally in behind you. You, know men of greatness did it for the cause, a reason and a passion to change - what Im seeing is a greed for power, political gain and a hidden sense of profit in leaving behind some kind of monumental legacy to be talked about long after you're gone. I think you need to take pause here... and start thinking about what you CAN change with your money instead of fighting old "Wind Mills", just like Don Quixote that won't turn with your wind! You want to make a difference find inventions that work - and build something better. Right now you're chancing your own wind for profit gain in Natural Gas and that platform is getting old.

Our government leadership has failed us, little surprise here. Policies are adversarial rather than helpful to the average citizen’s needs. Our government leadership must set the policies and put them into place so the average citizen and manufacturers are able to follow. Here in Pennsylvania, there are no CNG filling stations for vehicles near me and the few that are far away are either private or just are not available for public refueling. There are companies that do make kits for conversion, however some are not EPA certified (highly doubt the EPA would go after a private citizens, unless motivated by lawyers from oil companies), however like stated earlier, why convert when there is no public filling stations. Give me the stations and resources, make them reasonable in cost and I will convert...extremely fast. EPA Certified, now here is another oxymoron, with emphasizes on 'morons'. I did a little research on a CNG kit that was not EPA certified, in fact I emailed the EPA with a question about what that means, and not even they could answer. The did direct me to some memorandum that basically stated people are not to make any adjustments or changes to their vehicles fuel or exhaust system that the manufacturer did not do in the first place....Copy of reply: We know at EPA through our process of collecting data on AFVs manufactured that fleet purchases did move more towards OEMs due to Memorandum 1A regulations, but conversions do still occur today, just not a lot. EPA Memorandum 1A, issued in 1997, applies to all road-certified vehicles and all people. We would recommend contacting EPA directly for a definitive answer. http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/cff/memo-1a.txt AFV=Alterative Fuel Vehicle I believe this to mean that tuning your Fuel injection with an aftermarket chip, or changing the exhaust, or throwing in a CNG kit would all be illegal according to the EPA…Guess those pipes I put on my motorcycle are illegal also…lol By the way, a CNG running vehicle is one heck of lot cleaner than one running on gasoline.

This "thing" about NBC not airing a commercial is bothering me.... Having seen the ad here at the website, I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't air an ad unless there was some sort of factual problem with it. Are ABC and CBS running the ads? I haven't actually seen these the Iran Natural Gas Ad on ANY stations as of yet! Anymore, I'm suspicious of EVERYONE'S ulterior motives, Mr. Pickens included, so it's safe to say that I'm suddenly uncomfortable with the political turn this site and many of it's bloggers are taking. I fear this may be a clever ruse to increase demand for natural gas drilling which will ultimately be simply a personal benefit to Mr. Pickens and those in the gas industry. John McCain may very well be hearing the Pickens Army, but often times these sort of "Armies" end up being well intended people being led by the nose by a few to satisfy their own interests. I'm hanging around a while longer because I want to see our nation independent of foreign fuels, but this Natural Gas thing is most definitely nothing more than a stop-gap measure.

The Marxist thought police and propaganda pushers are here on pickens plan. RE: Harold B. Mosher here is the Iran evidence for CNG conversions http://www.greencarcongress.com/2008/08/iran-boosting-p.html Here is Iran oil revenue http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/WTARC/2008/me_oil_03_25.asp mar 2007 to mar 2008 is about $70 per barrel and was market rate based on iran exports of 1 billion barrels exports http://www.theodora.com/wfbcurrent/iran/iran_economy.html during same period. Everything T. Boone said in ad is true adjusting for inflation. Harold B. Mosher is Marxist thought police tasked to confuse and cloud the issue by claiming censorship and stating that t. Boone statements in his ad are false and unsubstantiated. Harold B. Mosher could have taken ten minutes to google the facts and do the math. The thought police relay on emotion to convince. The emotion engendered is the fear that the posters at pickens may be censored. Do not let your emotion be separated from your rational thought. Claiming something is false is an easy ploy by thought police because it invokes the logic of trying to prove the negative. Most people know that trying to prove the negative is impossible but the claim of falsehood still sticks in the minds of the reader. Everybody should do their homework. Another reason why Iran is switching to CNG is that it requires very little refining, My dad built a lot of the Iran refineries in the 60's which are worn out and iran won't contract with the US to repair them. And lots of refining were blown up during iran-iraq war and Iran's engineering talent is all tied up in nuclear energy and making nuclear war heads and rockets and Iran is addicted to its trade surplus from oil exports. Of course I could be wrong, and Harold B. Mosher could have pressed the wrong button last night and woke up cranky and had to vent his frustration of being overloaded with information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_overload

I like the fact that Pickens is investing 10 billion dollars into renewable wind energy, so immediately he is on my good side. But, I feel like we shouldn't jump into this natural gas plan in such a hurry. We could end up making the same mistakes we made with ethanol. Yes, corn ethanol is good for the american economy but it is forcing a competition between our need for fuel and our need for food. Will using natural gas to fuel our cars not compete with families trying to heat their homes during winter months? He makes it look so easy to take natural gas out of the home energy equation and replace it with wind energy, but lower income families can not afford to scrap their old gas furnaces and water heaters for electric. In the end they will suffer from the inevitable rise in gas prices, while he will see huge profits. Why not use the wind energy instead to power our cars directly with plug-in hybrids. The technology is already here. There is no need to spend millions on infastructure (natural gas filling stations). Just plug the car into a household outlet. Too simple a solution I guess.

Chuck Campbell

Lot's of interesting input on these posts. But I can't help noticing that the fact that natural gas emits CO2, same as gasoline, is being ignored. Frankly, I think the CO2 thing is vastly overblown, but it should be discussed when we discuss natural gas as a motor fuel.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2007/11/16/kerry_takes_oilman_pickens_up_on_1_million_swift_boat_challenge/ I am sickened by this cynical and devious accounting of T B PICKENS involvement in the Swift boat ads. The Marxist thought police and propaganda pushers are here on pickens plan. RE: Michael Vallez Vallez Says "NATURAL GAS IS NOT ALTERNATIVE ENERGY" This statement is propaganda. The thought police try to use catch all words to confuse the dialectic. NG is Alternate energy by strict definition. But Vallez attempts to confuse the thought process by using the word without any cooboration or explanation. NG is a Made in America energy to reduce in near term and stepping stone to eliminate oil imports in the future. Vallez says "I joined the Pickens plan because I thought that you genuinely wanted to do some good for America" but look at Vallez's profile and these first postings http://www.pickensplan.com/news/2008/08/28/nbc-the-pickens-plan-and-the-army/ show Vallez is of different colors. Vallez ignores the fact that Pickens plan calls for reduction of imports as his prime goal. Michael Vallez is Marxist thought police tasked to confuse and cloud the issue by claiming censorship and saying "Shame on you! You should be spanked"! And contrast this with the Vallez's supposed honest self protrait of a smiling handsome guy that you could never imagine would spank or would have a cause to be censored and also says he is from Utah the state which is at the forefront of CNG conversions. All, information intended to add weight to his arguments but on closer inspection and thought when taken together are very incongruent. Vallez statement The “Swiftboat Crew” that sank John Kerry" is false. The voters aren't stupid. After watching John Kerry's testimony of the 70's regarding Vietnam soldiers suposed behavior. John Kerry sank John Kerry.

richard j. erikson

Mr. Michael Vallez is not telling the truth when he states that we only have 4% of the world's natural gas and thus we would just be replacing one short supply fuel for another. I'm sure he knows that currently a natural gas pipeline has been started between Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and southern Canada that will then be further distributed East, South and West as needed here. Then, when ANWR is finally opened up, we'll have another major source, not to mention that Canada has huge natural gas reserves that they are only too happy to sell us with their small population. I can only imagine what Mr. Vallez's true motives of distortion might be?

Debbie Royal

I think the Pickens Plan has a LOT to offer, a different plan than we now have...hence a BETTER plan. I'm no scientist, but I am certain that we must change our 'gluttonness' ways. We know that wind as well as solar power, natural gas, ethanol...ALL of these and probably more need consideration. We need to save our planet, and ourselves. I also happen to be one of those people on the bottom of the 'income' pile...I survive on my Social Security Disability, and I DO pay rent but I live in a subsidized complex, I couldn't afford to live in L.A. again, so I am back where I was raised, and my daughter has now moved closer, so that we're at least in the same time zone again. Now, as for a further comment, I know Mr. Pickens has a great plan, BUT, how can people like me make an affordable investment for our future...will there eventually (hopefully sooner than later) be affordable 'shares' we can buy, and that investment make money for US in the future? I currently drive a '94 Saturn (that my daughter gave me), and I won't be able to make changes in it, so that the natural gas can be used to fuel it...what do people have to do the reconfigure their cars for this? I'm asking for education on this, can you help?

THE ALASKA NATURAL GAS PIPELINE WILL NEVER MAKE IT TO THE LOWER 48----------- Recent advancements in energy technology could turn the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline project into the largest boondoggle in history. By the time the $40 billion pipeline reaches its final destination in Chicago after a ten year construction schedule, the transformation to a highly efficient and renewable energy system will be well under way, if not substantially complete. ---------------- Currently, 26% of U.S. natural gas is used for electrical generation. Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens has been making a strong case that wind energy can replace natural gas in power generation, and do it for less cost. Pickens is practicing what he is preaching with a planned $10 billion wind farm in Texas. Denver billionaire and oil man Phil Anchutz just took over a $5 billion project to build an interstate electricity transmission system between his planned $3 billion Wyoming wind project and electricity markets in California. As an oil man, why is he not building a natural gas pipeline from Wyoming to California? The answer is simple: When you can produce wind energy for $.03 per kilowatt hour in Wyoming and sell electricity for $.20 in California, it is a no brainer. The international oil giant, BP, recently announced their participation in a $5 billion wind energy project in South Dakota. Ironically, BP is also one of the natural gas companies doing business in Alaska, and recently argued that the deal struck between the State of Alaska and pipeline competitor Trans Canada was not economically feasible. By being involved in both Alaska gas, and lower 48 wind, does this international oil giant know something that the other oil and gas companies have not figured out yet? As an investment, wind energy now surpasses natural gas. Anchutz, Pickens, BP and others will make billions from their timely and strategic investments in alternative energy. What we have considered alternative will soon be viewed as main stream. ------------------------------- While 26% of our domestic natural gas production is used for power generation, approximately 35% of it is used for space heating. In ten years, consumers will be well educated about space heating options which are less expensive than natural gas. In the Southern US, consumers have been replacing their fossil fuel furnaces with heat pumps for many years. In 2006, after ten years in development, Hallowell International began production of the all climate heat pump, with a 300% efficiency even when the temperature outside drops well below zero. Already, consumers in the upper US are retiring their natural gas furnaces and replacing them with high efficiency all climate heat pumps powered by clean, renewable and cheap wind energy from the grid. This kind of transformation has happened in the past, and it is happening again. I recently renovated a 1905 brick farm house which started out with wood as a heating fuel. Since that time, the home experienced three transformations including coal, oil and natural gas. It is about to experience its fourth transformation to an all climate electric heat pump, cutting space heating energy costs by 65%. ---------------- While technological advancements are driving down the cost of wind energy and space heating, the cost estimates for Alaska gas are going up. A 1995 study by the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System Group (ANGTS) indicated that the gas delivery cost from Alaska to Chicago would be $3.50 per million cubic feet. In 1995, natural gas was selling for about $2.00 per million cubic feet at the time, so the pipeline was not built. More recent figures for 2008 indicate that the break even delivery charge for the gas would be above $5.00 per million cubic feet. The $5.00 is just the delivery charge to pay for the construction and operation of the pipeline, not including the gas purchase price which would be demanded by the producers to cover leases, exploration, drilling, development and operation of the gas gathering system. By comparison, running a 300% efficient all climate heat pump with wind energy from the grid currently costs about $4.00 to produce the same heat content of a million cubic feet of natural gas. This is less than the cost to merely transport the gas from Alaska! --------------------- The sparsely populated state of Alaska makes 80% of their revenues from oil and gas royalties. Understandably, the people of Alaska have an interest in continuing and expanding this revenue stream. It is also understandable that the people of Alaska would have a governor who supports oil and natural gas, and one who asserts that the natural gas pipeline agreement that she signed on August 20, 2008 will contribute to our national energy independence. The Alaska gas pipeline, if ever completed, would only supply 7% of our current natural gas consumption for a limited period of time. This represents less than 2% of our total energy consumption. In contrast, the US Department of Energy recently published a conservative estimate that wind energy could soon produce 20% of our electricity needs. In fact, just developing the wind of North Dakota, Texas and Kansas would provide 100% of our electricity needs. ---------------- The American Petroleum Institute has been running a "red herring" propaganda campaign to divert our attention from the alternatives to oil and natural gas. Using a twisted interpretation of facts, they claim that we have enough natural gas to power “60 million cars and heat 160 million homes for 60 years”. It looks like Boone is caving in. Unfortunately, due to lack of science and energy education in this country, I see that some people on this blog seem relieved and enthused that a proposed pipeline from Alaska would add 2% to our energy needs in 10 years. If people believe that Alaska is going to do anything for our energy problem, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell to you........ Mike

Seems to me some have lost sight of the goal. The goal is to wean ourselves off fossil fuels. However, that cannot be done with the snap of the fingers. In fact, it will take about twenty years to accomplish this. People do not have the money to buy only electric cars the minute the become available. They probably do not have the money for the conversion kits to natural gas. However, we can slowly but surely wean away from fossil fuels. We just have to judiciously use them until we are capable of operating otherwise. Killing our economy by shutting down fossil fuels with no viable alternative, is stupid. It simply harms us, and actually produces very little result in the global warming mitigation many want to embrace. Even if we cut CO2 emissions by 50%, the net change in temperature will be less than two degrees, in a fifty year time period. Shutting down our economic engine just to accomplish those pitiful results, is stupid. Those who want this, are not thinking, or caring about the damages they will do to our nation

Michael Vallez

TWO PERCENT IN TEN YEARS-----------That is how much of our energy will come from the much hailed Alaska Natural Gas pipeline. If you think that this is going to make a dent in our energy problem, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell to you!! Mike

Michael Vallez

SORRY, WE ONLY HAVE 3.2% OF WORLDS NATURAL GAS-----------Please excuse my mistake when I said that we had 4% of the worlds natural gas reserves. We only have 3.2%. Check out the facts: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/reserves.html

Michael Vallez

SO WHAT IF WE ONLY HAVE 3.2% OF THE WORLDS NATURAL GAS???----- I will tell you so what............ If we convert our transportation system to natural gas, then we will have to build all those LNG terminals up and down our coastlines to import the LNG from overseas, that’s what! Boone, you lost my support completely with your tactics on natural gas. Sure, your natural gas fueling business would thrive no matter where the natural gas comes from! I do not think you give a rip about the US the way you claim. Have you not made enough money in your lifetime? These tactics are not going to leave a very respectable legacy behind. Don't you think that smart minds will catch up to you eventually? Do you think we are all sheep? Apparently you do.

RE Paul Torraco post above The AP story cited is dated almost a year ago in Novemeber 2007. And in that time Paul Torraco had not participated generating no comments and friends here at pickens plan. see http://push.pickensplan.com/profile/PaulTorraco Paul Torraco does not state nor does his web site reveal his pickens plan join date. Paul Torraco says "I am leaving this "campaign" " because of a story a year old and a belief. Paul Torraco may be Marxist thought police and propaganda pusher here on pickens but he says he has left. Paul Torraco by all accounts was never here. I, david Epps, joined this campaign because T. Boone backed off his no drill stance, and I want made in North America $1.68 per gallon natural gas (MO) for my trucks. And if T. Boone is to be the one of the many oil men to spread around those $3.00 gold nuggets so be it. Each gallon of CNG used in a CNG conversion vehicle is a $3.00 gold nugget. So if you drive 15000 miles per year at 25 mpg then spending $1.68 versus $4.68 per gallon gasoline works out to 600 gallons of gold nuggets or about $1800 per year. But that is only part of the picture. It is that $1800 gasoline savings for each of 110 million families and the 227 million vehicles that we hope stays in America buying Made in America products. And certainly the cost of the kit, lets say, $3600 each if made in america will put $817 billion into circulation. I would love it if T. Boone got into the CNG kit business. For every dollar the T. Boone makes from made in America wind mills, CNG, and CNG conversion kits is also money in my pocket and I only have to invest in America.

Ann Marini

Energy CONSERVATION should also be part of any plan. Of course it will not cure the oil crisis but it is a step in the right direction.

Stefanie Hritz

Hello, Americans! T. Boone Pickens is on the cutting edge, which leads me to wonder why our presidential candidates have not accepted this concept. Natural gas and wind energy could help millions of Americans who are hurting financially!

Boy howdy partner, I guess I touched on of Michael Vallez nerves. Well let me pinch it some more. RE: Michael Vallez's post above. Michael Vallezis is one of the Marxist thought police tasked to confuse and cloud the issue using standard propaganda practices of myths, hate spitting, and emotional vitriol. And use it until the opponenet goes into information overload and wants to just concede the argument. He block copies the text from some source and posts it calling it his own. He probably gets paid by the hour by some PAC to do just that, moveon.org comes to mind.. Last things first. It is irrelevant that the US has on 3.2% of the worlds natural gas. What is relevant is that The Natural gas is Made in America. T. Boone has always implied "From the Git Go, don't buy Cit Go" buy natural gas instead. T. Boone has always said that the US has got to move to renewable energy sources. T. Boone chose wind because it was the shortest distance for him to get to the giga watts. So Michael Vallez's is wrong to characterize T. Boones vision as one having "LNG terminals up and down our coastlines" What is relevant is whether or not the US has enough oil and natural gas reserves to boot strap a renewable energy infrastructure. The US cannot import all the oil needed to build all the wind mills, reap all the corn, manufacture all the hybrids, provide feedstock for industry, produce all the exports, build all the gizmos for coal pollution and CO2 sequestration and the other $13 trillion dollars worth of the other things that the US economy produces. So tag, CNG is it! And Pickens is right. and Vallez is wrong.

Lets pick the meat off bone. RE: Michael Vallez's post above. "THE ALASKA NATURAL GAS PIPELINE WILL NEVER MAKE IT TO THE LOWER 48". Well this whole post is politically targeted against Sarah Palin the soon to be VPOTUS. And it looks like to me it was picked up off news wire or some where and is not characteristice of Michael Vallez's other posts. No matter from whom Michael Vallez's plagiarized the information it is narrow sighted as is typical for propaganda. The post is a rant against the NG pipeline and attempts to paint some sort of conspiratorial relationship in its building. Well this is odd because Obama his self supports the NG pipeline. See http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/04/us/politics/04text-obama.html?_r=1

david epps

the link was to obama's lansing MI speech. Tthe post is continued here. So I must conclude that Michael Vallez must represent an environmental cause of some kind and that explains so much. The environmentalists are so shortsighted. There are thousands of things that the US produces requiring natural gas, fertilizer for the corn for the ethanol for example. And obtaining those feed stocks for the future production has to be planned in advance, just like water for Atlanta, nuclear waste disposal before on site storage fills up, coal fired plants before brownouts occur, drilling for NG and oil before the US goes broke. I would like to create an experiment by placing a male and female environmentalist on a single planet by themselves and watch to see if they procreate are enter into a mutual suicide pact. Some of the arguments that they come up with are suicidal. Michael Vallez is Marxist environmentalist and should be ignored. We need to take the management of US resources out of the environmentalists hands. The plagiarized article says the pipeline would only add 2% to our energy needs in 10 years. Well thats irrelevant. What is relevant is that the pipeline will provide 100% of the US industrial needs in 10 years. And this is exactly what T. Boone is getting at, use NG to bootstrap a wind solar, geothermal, nuclear energy future. Putting CNG in cars now is what these industries need now.

Seems reading all these comments that there are a lot of misguided angry people out there. And just about everyone that reads this comment will say- Yea, why doesn't EVERYONE ELSE wake up?

R. Ellis Smith

In our area, Ventura Ca most of the public buses and many city owned cars and trucks run on CNG. If that is possible why can't we have CNG station on every corner?

Does anyone else say that the Iranians are switching to natural gas in order to sell expensive oil? or just T. Boone? don't know. But it follows. It is the classic make or buy decision every businessman considers. Does Iran buy refineries or does Iran make CNG. Well the choice is clear with the price they can get for oil don't buy the refineries just sell the oil on the open market and make CNG to put into automobiles. the CNGV conversion is low cost per vehicle and the NG has little overhead.and it is not easily exported. T. Boone doesn't need a cite as to why Iran does what Iran does in this case because it is just good business. And this is the point the t. Boone makes in 15 seconds. It makes good business sense to buy Made in America CNG rather than buy it from, well whoever. And likewise it makes good business sense for Iran to use made in Iran CNG than to hire big American construction firms to rebuild Iran refining capacity, especially when Iran gets a higher price exporting oil than it can consuming it internally

Ann Marini

The first designed engine was powered by horse manure. This engine type needs to be resurrected and used in conjunction with CNG. Another good way to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

Michael Vallez

David Epps, I am flattered that you think my post was plagiarized. Thank you for the compliment. It really made my day! Yours truly, Mike

Folks, When the fuel crunch really hits, consider carpooling. Empty seats in single occupant vehicles represent the largest excess capacity in our human transportation system. Why do you want to advertise on NBC? Its views are very close to Karl Marx, and they have more plain hatred for this country than Marx. Supporting them is worse than supporting Iran. All great civilizations have rotted from within and there could not be a better example of promoters of this rot than NBC. bob

John White

When I first learned that NBC wouldn't run the Iran-NG ad, I wrote NBC. I was angered, not so much at NBC as a news organization, but at the fact that it was showing the same lackadasical response as our own government. I would note that I don't see GM or Ford or Chrysler or BP, Exxon, Chevron, Conoco, et al., al standing there beside Pickens enthusiastically high-fiving him--but I know that: GM and Big Oil (Standard in this case) and Big Tires have been coordinating their markets since they banded together and lobbied governtment at all levels to get rid of the public rail transportation systems in Los Angeles, etc., back in the late 1940s and 1950s and subsidized diesel bus lines and supported the building of freeways to replace the rail lines. In short, oil dependence was caused by auto, tire and oil producers looking to expand their respective, but highly integrated, markets in big urban centers around the nation. And that is the way it was until cheap oil started running out. And to be fair, it wasn't a particularly bad thing,--we ended up producing mega amounts of wealth for this nation by that action--but now the time has come to change. Nothing stays the same. It is clear that cheap oil made alternative energy a back-burner item. No more. Today, the truth on oil independence boils down to the simple undeniable fact that we have to start using energy substitutes for our critical energy needs until we no longer need oil. Pickens, whether evil genius or godsend (my personal view is that he is probably a little of both, but for right now he's the man with the plan), has galvanized a nation, and that is a miracle in and of itself. I don't care what Pickens' politics are, or were, or will be. In fact, I can say with certainty that he and I would vigorously disagree. What I do care about is that he's causing a nation which was showing signs of hopelessness at ever being able to disentangle itself from oil dependence, to understand that there is such a thing known as an "energy plan" which makes sense and will benefit the nation and make us energy independent. What's not to support about that?

"Last week, the U.S. Department of Energy released some stunning numbers about OPEC. In just the first six months of 2008 alone, OPEC countries sold $645 billion of oil. That almost matches the then-record $671 billion that OPEC pulled in for all of 2007. With oil stuck over $100 a barrel, those numbers didn't surprise me at all. What did surprise me was another statistic that I found buried deep in the report. The surprise was that the percentage of business that OPEC gets from China increased from 4% in 1999 to 11% today. At the same time, the percentage of revenue from the U.S. decreased from 12% to 7.5%." From: Money and Markets

The reason I support Pickens is he is a "been there, done that" type of fellow in the energy business. Check out MV's post below. It doesn't matter that Iran has 5x the reserves, what matters is the relation between the usage rate

Way to go team!!!!!!

COST OF CNG--- Ok folks, lets look at the facts. According to the website for Clean Energy Fuels, the cost of CNG is averaging $2.99 per gallon. The cost of the equivalent amount of energy to run a plug in vehicle is $0.75 per gallon. Check out the facts for yourselves.........Now, I understand that plug-ins do not work for over the road semi tractors. And, officially, Picken's plan relates to those and fleet vehicles. But I read all of these posts, and watch his 15 second ad, and he is clouding the matter. He cannot recruit us and call us his "army" under one set of pretenses, then change the agenda on us. Once a corporate raider, Pickens now wants to pick your pockets at the public trough. Check out the facts for yourself. Mike

We have 2 two problems here: (1) we have over 1 TRILLION barrels of oil on 2 land based fields alone!!!, at least 2 others in the lower 48 that have reserves that rival the mid eastern reserves, all of which translates to LIES AND MORE LIES from the oil companies, government, environmentalist, and liberals. (2) we only get a 20 - 25% burn on the fuel that we use now!!! We can sen up large numbers of space probes, usee a sattalite to read a dime at the base of the washinton monument and launch missles that will impact with in 10 feet of its target and all these rocket scientist cannot develop a more efficient way to get a complete usable burn on gas??? In addition they only have their eyes on corn which only gets 300 gpa. sugar beets would be better at 525gpa, (Gallons per acre) But sedge grass (prairie grass) gets 1100 gph and no one has the good sense to plant it. Any hay baler will do to harvest it. It is the highest producer and easiest to implement. In addition it has the nutrition value of alfalfa and is vastly better for our cattle than the grasses we imported and hybridized for our use. Can you say S-T-U-P-I-D, children.

David Estes

I see we did get this accomplished as I have seen the ad run on NBC, great job army.

all this natural gas stuff is great for car" write" wrong we have to think of something different does anyone know that driving a car with natural gas or hydrogen is very deadly, i saw someone online that had the hydrogen car and on all the tanks in big letters flammable everywhere, so i wrote to ask them what would happen if you got into a car accident, there was only one word from them, "bang" up in fire, everyone in the car and around it, all dead, no one would survive there is no chance of that, so i do not think this is the answer for us.

Marjorie Morakkabi

There is a problem with the ad. Iran started converting their vehicles 2 or more years ago due to the air pollution. When I was there two years ago in 2006 you had to wear something to help you breath because the pollution was so bad in the cities. Unfortunately we have our own goverment to blame for the high price of gas. We have known for well over 30 years that oil would run out but due to greed and stupidity nothing was done. How can we blame others for our own stupidity.

I e-mailed both Senator Barbara Boxer and representative Zoe Lofgren, requesting their support for Pickens' Plan. I think Pickens is showing a lot of courage to spearhead a campaign, out of his own pocket, for the benefit of our country. Our dependence on oil from fascist countries is ridiculous. It needs to change NOW.

EDGAR

I see a couple of people here criticize Mr. Pickens' proposals. Fine, we can criticize anyone, this is America after all. But, I think the it takes someone with the economic power of Mr. Pickens to wake up Americans. Congress won't do anything unless there's an imminent catastrophe in our hands, such as $300 a barrel of oil or $10 a gallon of gasoline. But that catastrophic day is coming, because oil is not unlimited. There are limited reserves and they're quickly running out around the world. Oil will be extremely expensive then, and the governments won't be able to do anything about it. We need to act now, before that occurs. Also, I don't thing Americans realize the size of the problem, when non-friendly countries are getting $500 billion of our hard earned dollars every year, and that money only makes THOSE countries richer and it makes us $500 billion poorer. That money should stay in America, even if its for corporations. Corporations give Americans jobs. Don't forget that.

Julie Strand

Thank you Mr. Pickens for spending your hard earned time and money to educate our Country on the current oil crisis!! I don't understand why more people, especially our candidates aren't taking to the plan more seriously but with the effort of all of us together, we CAN make a difference! It's people like you that make me proud to be an American! We can't sit back and ignore the facts anymore... it's time to take a stand for change!!

Deb

Something for all of us to think about-- We need to unite on this issue. There probably is not a perfect answer to this problem. I suspect Mr Pickens has an interest but you know what I don't hold any hard feelings for that. At least he has a plan! I have more hope now. This is plan and a work in progress. America is known for pulling through tough times. Lets pull together!!!! Deb

As I was checking the CNG fueling stations within a 25 miles radius of where I live in California, I was surprised to see that out of all the stations mentioned, that 95% of them were private or government owned and not for public use. Please tell me why, if this is the way for new fuel to be available, the Government and private enterprises are capitalizing on this type of fuel and not making it available to all now who wish to convert and become less effiecient on foreign oil? I believe in what T Boone Pickens plan is all about and I think that the alternative fuel should become a public vs. private/government so that all can benefit from it and not just the select minority. Pat Bell

Americans must conserve energy. To this end, bring on the engine that runs on horse poop. It was desiged by Henry Ford at the turn of the century.

doug stecklein

Does anyone know the efficiency of natural gas compared to gasoline? I know that ethanol is about 30% less efficient than gasoline. If you get 30 mpg with gas you get about 20 mpg with ethanol. I don't know how natural gas compares, but it is something to consider.

doug stecklein

Natural gas is 90% methane. Why don't we collect the huge amounts of methane released from cow poop each year and use it to power our cars instead of letting it escape into the atmosphere and increase global warming even more.
