The Stimulus Package and the Pickens Plan

Many elements of the Pickens Plan are beginning to show up in the specifics of the Economic Stimulus Package (officially known as the American Renewal and Reinvestment Act of 2009) which were released over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Washington Post reported,

“The White House released a four-page report outlining spending priorities and accountability measures for the recovery package. Obama wants to double renewable energy capacity within three years, creating enough additional capacity to power 6 million homes, and he plans to leverage $100 billion to finance private-sector clean-energy initiatives.

President Barack Obama, in his weekend message, stated:

To finally spark the creation of a clean energy economy, we will double the production of alternative energy in the next three years. We will modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes, saving consumers and taxpayers billions on our energy bills.

In the process, we will put Americans to work in new jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced - jobs building solar panels and wind turbines; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings; and developing the new energy technologies that will lead to even more jobs, more savings, and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain.

Among Pickens Plan issues the President is asking for are:

  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Promote the Responsible Domestic Production of Oil and Natural Gas.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Create a New $7,000 Tax Credit for Purchasing Advanced Vehicles.
  • Deploy the Cheapest, Cleanest, Fastest Energy Source - Energy Efficiency.
  • Weatherize One Million Homes Annually.
  • To make certain that even more of the Pickens Plan is included in the Economic Stimulus Package, you need to join your Congressional District Team.

The new leadership in Washington is heading in the right direction, and we need to show them that the Pickens Plan New Energy Army appreciates their efforts.

I just watched Obama on TV and not once did he mention domestic oil/natural gas drilling. What's key to note in the stimulus plan is that Obama and his administration are calling for RESPONSIBLE domestic production of oil and natural gas. Since there currently is no responsible solution, it will fall flat. Instead, he wants auto mfctrs. to develop fuel efficient vehicles, NOT natural gas-powered ones. He's also stepped on some lobbyists toes when he called for refurbishing the infrastructure for assisted living homes. There are millions of homes that are subsidized by the U.S. govt. that need new insulation so that the govt. can stop wasting billions of dollars per year on oil and natural gas. Lobbyists don't want this ... but it looks like they have no choice. Yeah!

Sorry Boone, the stimulus package it just too hard to swallow. I am asking my senators to vote "no" because it's filled with too much junk. I also am disappointed that you would push this stimulus package in order to get funding for alternative energy. Very disappointed... Sherry in Austin

If the Pickens plan is a quiver of arrows, Obama has chosen to launch a few in the general direction of establishing a National Energy Policy and sustain a promise of change. Hopefully that change will yield improvement. They (persistant professional detractors) label Obama as Socialist. Maybe so in the sense that he intends to replenish lower class social losses accrued over the last eight years. But in the 'red' and 'scary' sense - no. We should hope that the Admin choose the right arrows, ones that will succeed, so that the remaining ones have a chance also. Hitting the moving target is not so easy especially when the most active resistance and influences against are human ideolgical zealots bent on being 'right' rather than effective. Like a marriage coexisting as adversaries, putting the marriage on the line at every issue results in broken families, homes, and nations. My fervent hope is that the men and women of government adopt a position of 'progress not perfection'. The results of an energy plan should be evident in a matter of months. Please note that the profits of Shell, Chevron and Exxon have dropped but still combine to be an impressive sum compared to the stimulus package. What are the plans of these companies? Judging by the comments of investment bankers, their plans are to make money. Stock holders still rule in the energy business and no one holds more stock than corporate officers and sympathetic investment groups. So do not be surprised if there isnt a plan extant to put a temporary wedge between stock holders and management. TB Pickens is relatively safe because he is both primary holder and is a driving force toward change in energy management and Corporate responsibility. Such leaders come around about once a century. We are lucky to have two arrow heads now heading in the same reasonable direction.
